November Women’s Retreat – 2006
 Dianne Winter

I thank you all for the kindness you have given me and the role models you have been as Christian friends in my spiritual growth.

I am thankful for parents who taught me that good and bad things happen to everyone and you take it on.....and forge ahead. I received Christ as my Savior as a teen-ager in a small church in Enterprise, WV, after a journeying pastor preached.  I remember little of the sermon, but the call I received after it left no doubt in my mind that I was being called to be a child of Christ. I can still remember that hour and the feeling of it.

Since the church was so small and the education provided there was little, much of my spiritual upbringing started with the 4-H club which I credit with molding much of my being. The 4-H clubs are based on Luke 2:52 ...”and Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man”, hence the 4 H's - Head, Heart, Hand and Health. My mother was the leader and I praise her for the work she did to help young people in that organization.

The 4-H Club (The Eager Beavers) was in West Virginia where David and I were raised. We have been married 46 years and journeyed from West Virginia to TX to CA and back to TX where David exchanged flying for the AF to flying for Braniff. After piloting for 36 years he was diagnosed in April, 1990, with a heart condition that required a heart transplant which he received in August of 1991. He thrived on the transplant but the cancer that came in 1995 has been more difficult to combat. But he is a courageous warrior and is doing well so I have a grateful heart to accompany his transplanted heart.

During this journey I have discovered many detours that can divert a person from a smooth road to a rocky one. And since each person carries her own map, we all share some of these roadblocks that can be temporary or permanent.

One of these dangers is a 4 letter word that the remainder of the Barnabas class back in Garland is discussing today also......FEAR.

And one of the things we fear is the FUTURE...because the future contains the unknown.... unpredictable events, our own health and the health and well being of our family and loved ones and even our freedom that is threatened.

Even though as Christians we are equipped with a shield of armor that protects us–we may slip into the shadows and fear can breed in that darkness ......... then the only thing that overcomes the darkness is LIGHT.   God gives light for living through His Word and ultimately through His Son, Jesus Christ.    As we trek along our path we must walk in the light He provides.

These scriptures affirm our provision.
Ps 18:28 -My God turns my darkness into light.
Ps 27:1 - The Lord is my Light and my Salvation
Ps. 34:4 - I sought the Lord, and He answered me, he delivered me from my fears.
He protects us from evil.....2 Timothy 4:18  - the Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom.
The Lord is our fortress, deliverer, rock, refuge, strength, our shield, Savior and stronghold. Ps 18:1-5

There is spiritual darkness and a physical darkness. Helen Keller, who experienced the ultimate physical darkness said: “When the day ahead of you seems shadowed or darkness threatens to overcome you, choose life!
Take these words to heart and reject “nothingness” by turning to the Lord for His promise.  He will bring light into your soul and joy into your heart that will conquer fear.
